COLCHESTER MP Will Quince could be set to bring the House down to raise money for charity - by singing on Britain’s Got Talent.

Mr Quince agreed if £1,000 was raised for three Colchester charities he would audition for the hit ITV show.

The challenge was set by Twitter user @ColonelCamulos, who initially suggested a £250 benchmark.

The tenor MP, who can sing but has never taken lessons, performs exclusively at charity events and has admitted he initially did not think the challenge was serious.

But he does plan to honour his word and try to impress judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon.

He said: "I must admit, when I did agree to it, it was sort of tongue and cheek.

"But it’s for a good cause and if £1,000 is raised I will certainly keep my word."

He added: "What have I let myself in for?

"I should have said £5,000 with hindsight."

The MP added: "I don’t know much about BGT. It seems like a fun show so hopefully, if it comes to it, I can add to that fun and not make a fool of myself.

"They have got to raise £1,000 first."

A fundraising page is being set up and is expected to go live this week.

All the money raised will go towards The Robin Cancer Trust, Stepping Stones Play and Learn Group and Lexden Springs, which schools youngsters with additional educational needs.

Mr Quince would be the first serving MP to take to the stage and audition to perform in the variety show, the winner of which performs in front of The Queen.

The challenge came about after Mr Quince was put on the spot and asked to sing during the Colchester Nepalese Community BBQ and fun day on Sunday.

He posted a picture on Twitter and was immediately challenged by @ColonelCamulos.

That account tweeted: “@willquince the X-Factor offer is still there £250 for local charity.”

Mr Quince replied: “@ColonelCamulos Britain’s Got Talent - if you get it to £1000 for a local charity with others and you may have a deal!”

Contestants can attend auditions in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, London and Manchester.
