HATE crime has increased in Colchester since the EU Referendum, according to Colchester Council.

Mindless idiots have been spouting obscenities to people originally from nations inside and outside of Europe.

Leader Paul Smith said he did not have precise figures, but said police had provided the council with the information.

Colchester welcomed a number of Syrian refugee families.

Mr Smith said: “The council passed a motion to say we want to take more refugees.

“After the Brexit vote that position has not changed.

“All councillors, whether they voted to remain or leave, will hopefully be united in saying we welcome people to Colchester.

“We have always done so and hopefully we will continue to do so.”

The motion reads: “We are proud to live in a diverse and tolerant society. Racism, xenophobia and hate crimes have no place in our country. This council condemns racism, xenophobia and hate crimes unequivocally. We will not allow hate to become acceptable.

“This council will work to ensure local bodies and programmes have support and resources needed to fight and prevent racism and xenophobia.

“We reassure all people living in the borough of Colchester that they are valued members of our community.”

The motion will be voted on later this month.
