STUDENTS were honoured for their efforts in further education and apprenticeships at Colchester Institute's annual awards bash.

The college has held the ceremony for the last 11 years and award winners were presented with their certificates for excellence before enjoying afternoon tea.

Amongst guests who were invited to celebrate alongside the students were relatives, friends, tutors, college executives and governors who were given a speech by award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Frederick.

Colchester Institute's principal and chief executive Alison Andreas hailed the event as a huge success.

She said: "I never cease to be amazed at the talent and commitment of our students and it’s a fitting tribute to their achievements the award winners have been recognised by their teachers in this way.

"The awards ceremonies this week have been a fantastic way to end a wonderful year.”

Hazel Webb, 18, was named as the winner for outstanding achievement in hospitality.

She said: "I was really happy and pleased when I found out that I had won my award. I’ve worked really hard throughout the year – so it’s really humbling that I have been recognised for my efforts.

"I’m really looking forward to coming back to the college next year to study for my Level 3 course in supervisory in the hospitality industry."

John Wilson, 22, was named as the outstanding apprentice.

He said: "I’m really proud that I’ve won the award and that my efforts have been recognised – this really is a moment I can look back on and be proud.

"I really enjoy my apprenticeship at LMD Construction and I’m very keen to progress within the company to higher levels."
