MORE than 130 budding Mo Farahs turned out to take part in Colchester’s first ever Junior Parkrun.

The event at Old Heath Recreation Ground on Sunday invited children aged four to 14 to run 2kms to achieve their own personal goals.

The event will be repeated at the venue every Sunday at 9am and comes off the back of the Parkrun for grown ups each Saturday in Castle Park, which has become hugely popular.

Leanne Donovan, who founded Colchester’s junior event with Debbie Brand, said 134 children took part.

“The atmosphere was electric, we weren’t really expecting that many to turn up.

“Even people living around the park area popped over to watch,” she added.

To help with start-up costs, the junior Parkrun was awarded £2,000 from Colchester Council’s community enabling fund, and £1,000 from Active Essex.

A core team runs the free event each week but volunteer helpers are also needed.
