• FESTIVAL Big Sunday, St Botolph's Cultural Quarter, Colchester

COMEDY, performance and an unbelievable line-up of music will make this the best Big Sunday yet taking over a handful of venues from The Minories, Firstsite, 15 Queen Street and Three Wise Monkeys.

There's plenty of other attractions to look out for such as buskers and street entertainers, an ale festival at the Waiting Room and even have-a-go archery on Firstsite's D-Shaped Lawn.

  • CARNIVAL Brightlingsea Carnival, procession starts from the Recreation Ground

THIS year's carnival will have an Anzac theme to commemorate the arrival of 10,000 New Zealand and Australian soldiers into the town between 1916 - 1919 before embarkation to the Western front during the First World War.

As well as the colourful procession back at the 'Rec' there will be live music with Contraband, Sing Brightlingsea and the Essex Yeomanry Band and children's entertainment, stalls and food.

  • FATHER'S DAY Father's Day Steam Event, East Anglian Railway Museum, Chappel and Wakes Colne Station, Wakes Colne

When: Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm.

How much: Adults £9, seniors £8, children £4.50.

BRING dad along to this special steam event and let him have a go at driving the diesel locomotive, or have a ride on the footplate of a steam engine. All the usual museum exhibits will be open, including the mini-rail, and the miniature pub, The Viaduct, will be serving real ales from the Colchester Brewery. The new Chappel Station Cafe will be serving light lunches, home-made cakes, Farmer Bill's ice cream and coffee.

THE Family Choir has been meeting several times a year for the last 12 months and now has more than 25 members ranging in age from seven to 70.

This weekend they will be performing for family, friends and local residents with a programme that will include a mix of classical and modern songs with solos from some of the Family Choir members.

  • GARDENS New Town Open Gardens, New Town, Colchester

When: Sunday, 1pm to 6pm.

(Programmes available priced £3 from St. Stephen’s Church Hall, Canterbury Road.)

THERE are more than 20 gardens open for visitors to view this year as well as a display of wool spinning on a spinning wheel, a walking tour revealing the area's nefarious past and a plant and tool swap.

Money raised from the event will go to support The Red Cross and Butterfly Lodge Care Farm.

  • MUSIC Academy East Music School performance, the Band Stand, Castle Park, Colchester

  • POETRY/MUSIC Over the kitchen table...with Martin Newell, The Mercury Theatre, Balkerne Gate, Colchester

How much: £10. Recommended for 12yr+

POET, musician and local legend Martin Newell in his first ever appearance at the Mercury Theatre. Martin will perform an exclusive show of songs, yarns and poetry, all from the comfort of his kitchen table.

  • ART Backyard Garden Artists, In The Garden, 46 Parkfield Street, Rowhedge, Colchester

THE annual Rowhedge village art exhibition will include paintings, prints, sculpture, photography and ceramics in the garden.
