RAIL company Abellio Greater Anglia has pledged to invest £12million in a refurbishment programme of all its trains.

The company has published its annual report, which outlines its priorities for the remainder of its franchise, which finishes in October.

It also pledges to provide 600,000 extra standard seats a year on trains between Norwich and London by refitting seven catering vehicles.

The £12million scheme will see trains between London Liverpool Street and Norwich and Ipswich - which pass through Colchester - fitted with new plug points, lighting, carpets, tables and toilets.

More than 80 per cent of the work is already completed.

Trains on the Ipswich line will also be fitted with new seat covers and bosses are promising a more frequent 'heavy clean' programme for all trains.

Jamie Burles, Managing Director of Abellio Greater Anglia, said: "Our Annual Report to Customers highlights the progress we have made in the issues that matter to our customers and stakeholders – especially performance, customer service and upgrades to trains, stations and information provision.

"In the most recent National Passenger Survey results for autumn 2015, customer satisfaction improved significantly to 81 per cent, endorsing the investment of over £40 million we are making across the franchise.

"We know there is much more to do to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations."
