A WOMAN has been airlifted to hospital with serious multiple injuries following a crash involving a horse box lorry and a car.

Emergency services were called to School Road in Elmstead Market around 8.45am today after a horse box Scania lorry and a blue Audi collided.

The woman, in her 40s, was trapped in the Audi and fire crews worked at the scene to free her by 9.25am.

A nine-year-old girl was also in the vehicle but escaped unhurt.

The road is still blocked.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: 

"Two ambulances, an ambulance officer, East Anglian air ambulance medical car and air ambulance attended and treated a woman.

"She was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital with serious multiple injuries."

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "We were contacted at 8.40am with reports of a two vehicle collision involving a horse box Scania lorry and a blue Audi on School Road, Elmstead.

"A woman aged in her 40s from Alresford was trapped in the front of the Audi and needed to be removed from the car by the fire service.

"A nine-year-old girl was also in the vehicle.

"She was uninjured.

"The woman was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with serious injuries which are not deemed life threatening.

"The driver of the lorry was uninjured.

"There were no horses in the lorry."
