A DRIVER is in a life-threatening condition after a crash near Braintree.

Last night at about 7.20pm a blue Peugeot 206 and a black Vauxhall Astra crashed in Long Green, Cressing. 

Police officers and the ambulance service attended and the man driving the Peugeot was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with serious chest injuries.

The woman driving the Vauxhall suffered bruising and was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

Two ambulances attended, as well as the rapid response car, the Essex Air Ambulance critical care car and a Hazardous Area Response car. 

A number of people stopped to help following this incident but left before police arrived.
