COLCHESTER looks likely to pass go and collect £200 in the race to win its own edition of Monopoly after thousands cast their votes.

Six locations in East Anglia are battling it out to win their own board game and since the start of February, Colchester has won the most votes, with King’s Lynn hot on its heels.

It is up against Bury St. Edmunds, Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn, Newmarket and Sudbury and will be judged on the quality and diversity of its landmarks, as well as the number of votes it receives.

So far, Colchester has gained 31.2 per cent, King’s Lynn 27.4 per cent and nearby Sudbury is at the bottom with just 5.1 per cent of votes.

The winner will be announced in March, when a new poll for what people want to see on 22 property landmark squares will be opened.

Some keen voters have already posted their suggestions to games makers, Winning Moves.

A spokesman revealed ideas include replacing Old Kent Road with the Roman Walls, replacing Piccadilly Circus with the Roman Circus Centre and putting Jumbo on the Water Works square.

Many of the Chance and Community Chest playing cards will also be customised, which could see players ‘Sent to Southend’ if Colchester wins.

Emma Lodwick, custom games development executive for Winning Moves, said: “Absolutely everything is up for grabs.

“Each are very strong contenders.

“We originally began with a list of ten but have shortlisted these final six.

“Colchester at the moment is well ahead on the voting, with King's Lynn in second place."

She added: “We are sure whoever wins the board will be great.

“If Colchester remains ahead then we expect to be spoilt for choice on the local landmarks from there to fill the board.”

Polls close at midnight on February 20.
