SEVEN vehicles were seized for no insurance during a road policing operation in Colchester yesterday.
Road policing officers from the Casualty Reduction Unit led the operation to help reduce motoring offences and detect criminals on the county’s roads.
Offenders were identified by officers patrolling in cars and on motorcycles and through Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology, before being escorted to check sites on Essex Yeomanry Way and Cowdray Avenue.
A total of 27 drivers were spotted not wearing a seatbelt and 22 were seen using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
Thirty-three vehicles were found not to have a valid MOT and four drivers were found to be driving otherwise than in accordance with their licence.
The driver of one vehicle was given a vehicle defect rectification notice and given 14 days to resolve the problem or face prosecution, points on their licence and/or a fine.
Sgt Dave Rudd from the Casualty Reduction Unit said: "The high number of drivers whose vehicles did not have valid MOTs highlights that people are unaware or forgetting to check when they expire.
"Please remember to check when your vehicle’s MOT is next due.”
