A HOMELESS man is in need of a garden to pitch a tent over Christmas.

The man, who has not been named, is not allowed to stay at the night shelter in Colchester as he will not leave his dog, who is not allowed inside.

Volunteer Simon Mackinder at Open Door, a homeless charity, put a plea out on Facebook to find him a home for Christmas.

The homeless man has been visiting the homeless charity in Eld Lane for years, and Mr Mackinder is concerned for his safety during the winter nights.

He said: “He is a really nice guy. He has been coming to open door for quite a while and I am a bit worried about him over Christmas.

“Our biggest concern is him, he was told if he could find someone to look after the dog the night shelter would take him in, but he has always had the dog and doesn’t want to leave it.

“He is one of the original members here, he is just down with his luck which is such a shame.”

Mr Mackinder has been volunteering with homeless charities after finding himself with nowhere to live several years ago.

He has since got back on his feet and recently hosted an event at the centre to help raise awareness of the challenges homeless people face around Christmas time.

If there is anyone who can provide accommodation for the man, they should contact Open Door on 01206 769436.
