A RANGE of unpalatable specials will be on the menu for anyone tempted to risk drink or drug driving this Christmas as part of a countywide campaign.

The Safer Essex Roads Partnership has produced posters in the style of specials boards used in pubs and restaurants featuring penalties which could include a disqualification from driving, a large fine, potential imprisonment and reduced job prospects.

Some bars and nightclubs will also be using campaign specific beer mats and bar runners to hammer home the message that there is no excuses for drink or drug driving.

Public engagement events will be held at Colchester’s Park and Ride and the car park of the Asda superstore on Turner Rise on Thursday.

Chairman of SERP, Nicola Foster said: "Drink and drug driving are year round issues but we are using the festive period to remind drivers of their responsibilities, and the penalties if they are caught.”

SERP partner Essex Police are keen for people to report anyone they know who regularly drinks or takes drugs before getting behind the wheel by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Casualty reduction manager Adam Pipe said: “The community can play a significant part in supporting safer roads over the festive period.

“Our efforts to identify people who use their vehicles under the influence of drink or drugs and risk harming not only themselves but other road users are strengthened by the flow of information and intelligence from members of the public.”

The campaign runs until January 4 and is part of the umbrella scheme entitled No Excuse for Poor Driving.
