BUSES will be allowed to bypass a controversial six-mile diversion for the first phase of works to create a cycle path.

An 800-metre stretch of Colchester Road, Wivenhoe, will be shut round the clock between Boundary Road and Vine Drive while Essex County Council engineers start work on a cycle path to link the town to Essex University.

But County Hall has now revealed that buses will be able to travel on the closed road when work begins on Monday.

County councillor for Wivenhoe Julie Young said: “At last we have clarity over the arrangements and access is going to be maintained for buses.

“Although delays are expected this will be better than the diverted route.”

The first phase of work will finish on December 18 when engineers break for Christmas.

Work is set to continue between January 4 and March 25 when there will be no access for buses.

The diversion will see vehicles travelling from the A133 will be directed to travel along Rectroy Road, Rectory Hill and Alresford Road to get into Alresford.

They will then have to go along Wivenhoe Road and back along the B1027 to return to Wivenhoe.
