CORONATION Street star Hayley Tammadon is set to add sparkle to this year's Christmas lights switch on in Colchester.

Hayley, who plays Andrea Beckett in the hit soap, will join Colchester's Mayor Theresa Higgins to get the town’s seasonal celebrations underway as they switch on the spectacular new display of stars and baubles in the High Street.

Hayley Tammadon first shot to fame playing Delilah Dingle in Emmerdale.

Her popularity soared when she won the fifth season of Dancing on Ice with professional ice skater Daniel Whiston in 2010.

The couple reunited in 2014 for the All-Stars edition of the show where they came second.

Since December 2013 Hayley has been starting in Coronation Street as Andrea.

Mrs Higgins said: “We’re thrilled to have Hayley Tammadon switch on the Christmas lights this year. The light switch-on is one of the most popular events of the year and is even more exciting this year as we celebrate a new theme to the town’s lights.”

The switch on will take place on Sunday November 29 at 4.30pm.

Prior to the main switch on in the High Street, there will be lots of activity across the town from 2.30pm.

Highlights are set to include a festive performance from the Funky Voices Choir in the High Street, Headway Fayre in Culver Square, Santa’s Magical Post Office in Lion Walk, and festive fun and activities in Sir Isaac's Walk.

As well as the centre piece decorations spanning Head Street, High Street and Crouch Street, lights will be simultaneously turned on in Lion Walk and Culver Square at 4.30pm.

Hayley will then take the short walk to Castle Park to visit Colchester’s new Winter Wonderland and its Ice Rink, run by Reflective Ice Ltd.

Ben Payne of Reflective Ice, said: “I hope as many people as possible come along to see Hayley Tammadon and take part in what promises to be a magical and unforgettable event. The ice ink is a new and exciting addition to Colchester’s Christmas activities this year so, whether you’re an experienced skater or an absolute beginner, wrap up warm and come along to Colchester Ice Rink for a fantastic time.”

Bill Frame, the council's portfolio holder for Economic Development, said: “These events signal the start of Christmas in Colchester and are certain to bring lots of festive fun at this wonderful time of year. Colchester is a great choice for everyone doing their Christmas shopping, with plenty of opportunity to support local businesses and jobs through these tough economic times.”

Christmas in Colchester is being coordinated by the Colchester Christmas Group.

Chair Michelle Reynolds said: “This year the group have worked hard to deliver a spectacular community event, showcasing some of Colchester’s very best local talents. These brilliant displays will be topped off by Hayley Tammadon actually throwing the switch to turn on our spectacular new lighting display.

“You need to come early to experience all the activities in Lion Walk, Culver Square, along Sir Isaac’s Walk and Eld Lane, and of course along the High Street. You may even bump in to the characters from the Mercury’s fabulous pantomime and help unveil WillIiam and Griffins’ Christmas window.”
