PLANS to convert part of a former department store into apartments have been recommended for approval.

Dove Properties submitted a planning application to Colchester Council which would see the vacant first and second floors of St Nicholas House on Colchester High Street turned into 15 one and two -bedroom apartments.

If permission is granted then a third floor with five extra apartments would be added, as well as a new High Street entrance lobby.

The bottom floor of the building, which was originally built by Co-operative as a department store, is operated by the Entertainer toy shop and Sweatshop. Both would remain on site.

Three parking bays and a rack for 24 bicycles would also be installed.

Council officers have recommended the proposals be passed.

Only one objection to the proposal has been received and Colchester Council’s planning committee will have the final say at a meeting next Thursday.
