PROTESTERS against a new nuclear power station are voicing their concerns globally in an online video.

The Fight Against Bradwell campaigners are putting together a film for residents to make their views known worldwide.

Last month, more than 300 protesters took over the River Blackwater at West Mersea for a peaceful beach protest against plans to build a new nuclear power station at Bradwell-on-sea.

Now Mersea town councillor Sophie Weaver has taken the fight a step further, producing a short video of interviews with residents who fear the plans will ruin the island forever.

Ms Weaver said: “Lots of people were having their say at the beach protest which came about through social media.

“The most natural next step was to use it to make a video as no-one should underestimate the power of the media.”

Residents could attend a drop-in session at the Mersea centre in the High Street on Saturday.

Their interviews will be cut into a short film with images of the island and music.

There is even a chance some famous faces will star in the video.

Ms Weaver said: “We want this message to go viral and to be shared globally. I was encouraged by the amount of support we had and people feel there is still an opportunity to fight on.

“It’s all about people power, it will have a great impact.”

One West Mersea resident, Toni Vince, said the video will mean more than just a name on a petition.

She said: “Hearing what people actually have to say makes it real.

“I lost it towards the end as I just think it is total nonsense that another country can take control.”

French firm EDF decided to sell rights to build a new nuclear power station to Chinese state-owned companies.

In return they will have investment into two new plants at Hinkley Point in Somerset and Sizewell in Suffolk.

Another resident, Shirley Swan, lives opposite the proposed site and was keen to be a part of the personalised and powerful video.

She said: “It’s a complete myth this country needs to build more nuclear power stations to prevent the light from going out, we should concentrate on encouraging renewable energy sources right now.

“I love living on the island and I really resent the proposals, we must put an end to this insanity before it’s too late.”

The Mersea Island Environmental Alliance and the Blackwater Guardians say they are also fighting to prevent harm to the island and future generations.

The new protest video should be available to view on YouTube and the FAB Facebook page in a couple of weeks.
