VOLUNTEERS are needed to take part in a community policing campaign.

Operation Homeguard was launched in April 2013 by former Colchester district commander Chief Insp Richard Phillibrown.

It was set up to help police spread crime prevention messages and offer advice in crime hotspots in Colchester.

In particular it was hoped it would help residents avoid falling victim to burglary sprees in the borough.

PC Michael Lee, who helps to run the operation, said: “The concept sees volunteers joining police to offer public reassurance in identified areas.

“Since its inception we have interacted with more than 15,000 residents with more than 50 deployments.

“It is also a visual deterrent to prevent emotive crimes such as burglary.”

With cuts to the number of officers and Colchester expected to only have six PCSOs by April the use of volunteers is becoming even more important.

During the first year the number of burglaries in Colchester dropped by more than 100.

Funding for jackets and identifcation was provided by the office for the police and crime commissioner.

12 volunteers were signed up and successfully vetted during the first year and more are now needed.

PC Lee said: “The operation will give you the opportunity to gain voluntary experience of working with the public which could also help you with your careers and further studies.”
