WORK is still on-going into a report looking at possible uses for Colchester's water tower.

The North East Essex Building Preservation Trust is preparing a feasibility study into Jumbo.

It is hoped it will provide a vision for using the tower which has stood unused for nearly 30 years.

The Grade II listed Victorian building was bought by chicken farmer Paul Flatman at auction last year for £190,000.

However, no plans have been emerged for what will happen to it.

Jumbo was sold by George Braithwaite, after Colchester Council twice threw out his plans to convert it into penthouses, flats, a restaurant and offices.

A museum would also have been created in its giant tank.

Colchester Council has paid £5,000 towards the study and it was hoped it would be ready this month.

However, David Balcombe, director of the building preservation trust, said more experts needed to give their views.

Mr Balcombe said: “We took the report to the trustees. They wanted further research in relation to one of the options which required specialist consultants.

We are now waiting for their report.

“We want to get this right and make sure the report is complete.”

Mr Balcombe said members of the trust also met Mr Flatman and hoped to continue the discussions with him.

He added: “There will be an enormous amount of work to do in the future.

“It is not going to happen tomorrow and we have to be mindful of not taking shortcuts.”
