MAJOR improvements have been carried out at Colchester’s Mercury Theatre.

More than £500,000 of funding has been used to transform the facilities at the theatre over the summer.

Work has included refurbishing the theatre’s studio, improving disabled access and improving the temperature in the studio and main theatre.

An air heating and cooling system has been installed in the studio and theatre to keep both at a comfortable temperature all year round.

The majority of work has been carried out by Colchester-based companies including Essex Mechanical Services and ND Smith Contracts.

Steve Mannix, Mercury Theatre executive director, said: “This funding has given us a wonderful opportunity to improve our facilities for all visitors to the theatre - not only in terms of audiences, but also local theatrical talent.

“We are proud through this project to have been able to support local businesses by using their skills and expertise to make these improvements.”

Funding for the work was provided by the Arts Council, Colchester Council, the J Paul Getty Jnr Trust, Fowler Smith and Jones Trust and from the theatre’s only reserves.
