COLCHESTER Council is warning troublemaking tenants bad behaviour will not be tolerated.

A tenant was recently evicted from a house in West Mersea after complaints about severe noise.

The council hopes its tough action will deter any potentially disruptive neighbours by making an example of them.

Essex Police received reports in April of out-of-control and destructive behaviour at a house in Windsor Road, West Mersea.

Resident Alan Sharpe said: “Every Friday night was terrible.

“The young man who lived there not only made life difficult for the road, but also had an awful temper.”

Another neighbour said they wore earplugs at night to get some sleep.

The council said the property suffered substantial damage during a three-month period, with police officers called to several incidents.

Evidence was presented at Colchester Magistrates’ Court and a closure order was served on the premises.

The tenant was evicted and residents living in the area said their quality of life has improved.

PC Shaun Hammond from Colchester’s Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “It was clear the actions of these individuals were affecting other tenants in the area so much, some neighbours were becoming nervous about leaving their homes.

“This sends a clear message Essex Police will not tolerate such behaviour by tenants, either in social housing or who are privately renting and we treat complaints of this nature seriously.”

A council spokesman said: “We work with Essex Police to tackle and resolve anti-social behaviour across the whole borough.

“Everyone deserves to enjoy their neighbourhood without intimidation and, although rare, we take cases of extreme antisocial behaviour seriously.”
