Two people were taken to hospital after a head-on crash in Braintree.
A grey Audi and a silver Ford were in collision in Broad Road close to where the road meets High Garrett at about 5.30pm yesterday.
The ambulance service sent a two ambulance crews, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance officer to the scene.
One person was treated for chest pain and another, who had a suspected head injury, was in a serious condition which was not life-threatening.
Following the first crash, a red Renault Megane, a grey Alfa Romeo and a red VW then collided.
The people in these vehicles only suffered minor injuries and did not need to go to hospital.
Essex fire service also atended the scene to deal with a fuel spillage.
Emergency services stayed there until about 9.30pm.
