A body has been found near Gosfield lake.
Emergency vehicles attended the scene, in Church Road, Gosfield, at about 2.40pm.
The ambulance service sent an ambulance, a HART vehicle, an air ambulance and an officer.
The area was cleared by about 5.20pm.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing and investigations are continuing.
Police have confirmed that the body is not that of Chris May who is currently missing.
UPDATE: 10.30am Thursday: Police have confirmed it is a man's body and there are no suspicious circumstances.
The case will be passed to the coroner.
