THE 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe was marked in Colchester.
A service took place at the war memorial in the High Street to commemorate 70 years since VE Day on May 8, 1945, when German forces formally and unconditionally surrendered.
The short ceremony was led by the Right Rev Roger Morris, Bishop of Colchester, and was organised by Colchester Garrison and the Colchester branch of the Royal British Legion.
VE Day was an occasion of national celebration, yet also one of sombre reflection for those who would not return.
The anniversary celebrated the achievements of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the Allies in their victory against fascism overseas and on the home front, while paying tribute to the 580,406 UK and Commonwealth service personnel and 67,073 UK civilians who lost their lives during six years of conflict.
A service was also held on Clacton seafront.
