WITNESSES to a serious car crash are being asked to come forward.

An unmarked BMW police car was involved in the smash in Lexden Road, Colchester, at about 2.40pm on Monday.

It was on an emergency call from its Stanway base when it collided with a black Audi A4.

The crash happened between West Lodge Road and Sussex Road.

A long cordon was set up between Beverley Road and The Avenue.

Two officers in the BMW had to be cut free from the wreck by firefighters.

The driver of the Audi, a 35-year-old man from Colchester, was not hurt.

The officers were taken to Colchester General Hospital by ambulance.

Their injuries were not serious, but they stayed in hospital overnight as a precaution.

Lexden Road was closed for a several hours whilst the vehicles were recovered and forensic examinations took place.

The road was re-opened by 6.30pm.
