DRIVERS are warned they face fines for using a stretch of North Station Road, Colchester, which is now a bus lane.

The northbound lane between the Albert roundabout and Essex Hall roundabout is now bus-only, although residents can still access the road.

It means the entire stretch, northbound and southbound, is now bus priority.

The change was made to coincide with Colchester’s Park and Ride, which began on Monday.

A warning sign has been installed at the Albert junction, but motorists have been flouting the rule.

It had been thought Essex County Council, which will police the lane, would afford motorists a grace period.

But a spokesman said yesterday: “The prohibition of vehicles traffic regulation order applied to North Station Road, northbound between the Albert and Essex Hall roundabouts, is enforceable and is being monitored.”

It means drivers who have already used the lane incorrectly could face a fine of £60.

If it is paid within 14 days, the charge will be reduced to £30.

If the fine is not paid within 28 days, the cost rises to £90.
