Colchester Rugby Club’s under-16s were crowned winners of the Eastern Counties Cup Winners Cup.

They beat Wymondham and hosts Cambridge, to lift the trophy.

After Wymondham beat Cambridge 7-5, Colchester beat Wymondham 34-0.

Chowa Chanda scored two first-half tries and Jack O’Sullivan also bagged a try, with James Parry kicking conversion points.

Winger Ben Norfolk ran through several tackles to score in the corner and Fergus Wishart added another.

Sage’s successful conversion was then followed by Chanda’s well-deserved third try.

Colchester then took on Cambridge and ran out 10-5 winners.

Cambridge scored a try to go in 5-0 ahead at the break but Colchester’s half-time team talk had the desired effect, with the team playing with more intensity in the second half. Norfolk broke through the Cambridge defence to level and James Pilcher drove over from close range, to secure the trophy for Colchester.

Colchester under-16 winning squad comprised: Chowa Chanda, Joe Cook, Owain Cowley, Jesse Fearn, George Fenning, George Holroyd, Craig Lane, Jamie Murray (captain), Ben Norfolk, Jack O’Sullivan, Troy Palmer, James Parry, James Pilcher, Joe Rice, Francois Rossouw, Jonathan Sage, Gareth Sanders-Crook, Alex Shemming and Fergus Wishart.

Colchester’s under-15s won 67-7 at Norfolk Cup finalists West Norfolk, outscoring them by 11 tries to one.

But Colchester’s under-14s were beaten 17-3 in their Eastern Counties Cup Winners Cup Final against Wymondham.

Bacon kicked an early penalty to give Colchester the lead but their worthy opponents recovered well to claim victory. Colchester’s under-16 C team emerged 41-5 winners at Harwich, in what was a well contested and spirited game of 13-a-side rugby.

Centre Jake Southall capitalised on some quick ball to open the scoring for Colchester, before winger Will Goodwin used his pace to run in shortly afterwards.

Fullback Codie Simpson rounded off some slick passing to touchdown before second row Chris Palmer charged in and under the posts, for a fine individual score.

Prop Levy Bird capped a very encouraging performance with his first try for the club, as Colchester went in 34-0 at half-time.

A spirited Harwich side came more into the contest after half-time but second row Henry Hughes used his strength to drive over to extend the visitors’ lead.

Harwich bagged an excellent breakaway score late on but Colchester ran out winners.
