A SWINGERS’ club has been granted permission to become a permanent fixture.
The Lexden-based Mingles club opened last August after securing permission to become a private members’ club for one year only.
Now owners Jason Woolf and Rebecca Freeman have been given permission for the club, at 66a London Road, to remain there permanently.
It follows a consultation period in which two comments of support and just two objections had been made to Colchester Council.
The application attracted particularly strong opposition from Andy Hamilton, of Acland Avenue, Lexden, who claimed the club is “no better than a brothel”.
He has spent many evenings outside the club protesting against it and has described the decision to grant permission as “astonishing”.
But Mr Woolf said: “We are delighted to receive permanent planning permission for our business and would like to thank Colchester’s planning and licensing departments for their support and professionalism in handling what appears to have been a sensitive case.
“We were confident that our private members’ club would not cause disturbance or have any negative impact to the area and we are thankful for having the opportunity to prove this, which has been confirmed by the absence of any complaints about the club from neighbouring properties.”
Mr Woolf said the membership of the club – which is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights – is “steadily growing as more couples understand the communicative benefits and friendships that an adult lifestyle club can bring to their own relationship”.
Prior to the opening, nearby residents had expressed concerns over the activities which would be going on in the club – which has a “kinky corner” and runs fetish nights – but Colchester Council licensing officers said it had operated “without any significant issues”.
Dozens of customers have attended each night the club has been open.
According to figures published on Colchester Council’s website, the highest attendance on one occasion was 54.
More than 40 per cent of the club’s customers are from north Essex, while almost 1 in 10 members live in the CO3 postcode area, which covers Stanway, Lexden and Fordham Heath.

Bonkers.

Seems that society has double standards when it comes to this sort of establishment. We see no problem in giving it the go ahead but if a politician, tv star or premier league footballer is seen visiting all hell breaks loose in the media.

Well said Red Tape 2. People need to lighten up!
And Andy Hamilton needs to stop harassing this lawful, harmless business.

Presumably you're a fan of this type of activity...If you are then why pan others for their lobbying or opinion....I can take it or leave it has no real concern to me...What does concern me is that this activity generally not always but generally leads to S*x... Now in my opinion s*x, money and desires, can all lead to wrong doing and crime...We have enough problem with serious crime in this borough, without it being stoked up and fuelled by legal and officially sanctioned activities like this...Contrary to what has been achieved, I do not agree with this type of club or facility..

At last the council make the right choice for a quiet minority to do and use what should be a natural human function and need without doing any harm to anyone outside the privacy of its closed doors I wish them good luck in this venture ...

It looks like the Council have seen sense. All the people out there that are shouting and screaming about something that consenting adults are doing behind closed doors, out of the public eye. But do not really know what they do, unless they are members too but will not admit it.Who really cares what they do ? They are not hurting you, me or anyone else.
These are the type of people that condem private members clubs but want things like fox hunting. Ripping a live fox to shred's in public view, hearing it`s death screams.
Now that is sick, and the ban should stay. But private members clubs, live and let live.

Excellent news, common sense prevails. This will put Lexden on the map!!!
Just a pity that this discreet club, and its members, have to put up with this Andy Hamilton. Seems a weird type, should be arrested for his xenophobic attitude toward decent folk. Silly little man, get a life!!!
