COLCHESTER Council is set to take part in International Commonwealth Day.

The council joins heads of state, prime ministers, as well as hundreds of other local authorities in flying the Commonwealth Flag.

The Colchester ceremony - which will be led by mayor John Elliott - will take place at 10am on Monday.

Mr Elliott will read out a message from His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

The flag will remain in place for the duration of a week.

Mr Elliott said: “I’m delighted to be participating in this global event, marking Colchester’s support for the Commonwealth, its communities and the values it upholds.

“Along with having the honor to read a special message from The Queen, it is a great opportunity for Colchester residents to recognise the benefits of friendship and cooperation that the Commonwealth stands for.”

Brightlingsea Town Council will also take part in the event.

A flag will be raised at 10am at the war memorial, in Victoria Place.
