ACTOR Richard Wilson unearths Colchester treasures as part of a TV show to be screened later this month.
The Shakespearean actor, best known for his depiction of misery guts Victor Meldrew, is presenting the new TV programme On the Road.
In it, he ditches the sat nav and tours the UK in his vintage 1960s Daimler using the Shell Guides first published in the 1930s.
Following the 1968 guide to Essex, Mr Wilson visited Mersea Island and Colchester town cenre.
At Mersea, he was taken out on a boat to find oysters.
He also saw the archaeological dig carried out as part of the redevelopment of the Colchester High Street store Williams and Griffin.
Among the finds, archaeologists discovered fine gold and silver Roman jewellery which had been buried for safekeeping in a pit dug in the floor of a house during the early stages of the Boudican Revolt in AD 61.
The jewellery was the first Roman hoard of precious metals found in the town centre.
Mr Wilson also followed the guide to visit the “new town” of Harlow and the Jacobean palace, Audley End.
The programme, which is the fourth in the series of six, is being shown on ITV at 8pm on January 26.
