THE lucky winner of a competition to decide who will switch on this year's Colchester Christmas Lights has been revealed.

Emma Elsey, seven, of Clacton, has been chosen to assist the Mayor light up the town on Sunday.

She won a radio competition to design Cinderella's slipper, the theme of this year's Mercury Theatre pantomime.

Emma beat off competition from more than 60 other entries to join the Mayor on the balcony and plunge the switch to light up the town.

Emma will join Cinderella and Prince Charming from the Mercury Theatre’s pantomime Cinderella as they travel as part of a procession to the Town Hall in time for the event.

The lights switch-on will turn on the illuminations on the High Street, Head Street and Crouch Street.

Paul Smith, councillor responsible for business and resources said: “I hope once again thousands of residents and visitors will come to Colchester to enjoy it and the day’s other activities.

“The beautiful snowflake lights will really add a touch of magic to the town for everyone shopping and enjoying the entertainment on offer in the build up to Christmas.”

Christmas in Colchester is being coordinated by the Colchester Christmas Group.

Chairwoman Michelle Reynolds said: “This year has not been without its challenges, but with great partnership working and fantastic support, we are delivering a town-wide co-ordinated approach to Christmas.

"With the unveiling of the famous Williams and Griffin Christmas window, the characters of Cinderella, the Mercury’s pantomime, making an appearance and helping turn on the lights, it’s going to be a great event. We hope everyone will come and support us and enjoy the day.”
