Police closed a road in Coggeshall after an electricity pole burst into flames.
A fire engine from Coggeshall was called to Grange Hill at about 10pm yesterday.
By 10.36pm the fire went out on its own.
Firefighters did not put water onto the fire because electricity was still live.
Crews stayed at the scene until 11.35pm to keep the area safe until the electricity was switched off.
Fire investigators said the cause of the fire was an accidental electrical fault.
UPDATE:
A UK Power Networks spokesman said: “UK Power Networks engineers were called to a pole fire at around 10.20pm last night affecting power supplies to 41 customers in the Grange Hill area of Coggeshall.
“Power was restored to customers in stages but we currently have one customer without supply due to access issues.
“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this incident.”
