A World Cup medal given to Jimmy Greaves after a public campaign has sold for £44,000.

Greaves, a business partner at The Notleys Golf Club in White Notley, was given the award for being part of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad.

However, the ex-Tottenham Hotspurs player had originally missed out on a medal because until 1974, only the winning players on the pitch at the end of a final received the award.

Greaves had played in all three of England's Group A matches v Uruguay, Mexico and France.

But a leg injury in the France match forced him to play no further part in the tournament, his place being taken by hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst.

In 2007, a campaign led to FIFA deciding to award medals to players who were part of a winning squad but did not play in the decisive match of tournaments held between 1930 and 1974.

The gold medallion was auctioned yesterday.
