A study to see if more CCTV cameras could be installed in Witham’s town centre to deter nuisance drunks will be carried out.

At a town council meeting on Monday, councillors decided to check how much it would cost to install cameras at the period garden behind the town hall after it was discovered that it has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour.

Groups of drinkers have been seen congregating there, ignoring ‘no drinking’ signs and intimidating other walkers.

Geraldine Kennedy, community secretary at Witham Town Council, said that residents needed to report any nuisance behaviour to the police so the force are aware of an existing problem and can act upon it.

She said: “It’s very important that if people see something then they should report it because if the police do not know about it then they see that there isn’t a problem as it doesn’t come up on their statistics.
