YOUNGSTERS celebrated their school’s 50th anniversary by organising a party.

The party, at Hazelmere Infants School, was organised by Year 2 children, who were given a budget and charged with coming up with fun games and activities.

They dressed up in costumes ranging from pirates to Batman and laid on a feast for everyone to enjoy in what was the first of a series of events over the next year.

Deputy headteacher Sarah Atkins said: “When the children are involved, things are always good fun.

“There will be many more opportunities for marking this a special year as part of the children’s learning.”

The school, in Bromley Road, Greenstead, Colchester, was also celebrating a renewed “good” rating from Ofsted after an inspection earlier this month.

Headteacher Steven Turnbull said: “This judgment is tremendously encouraging and rewarding for the whole school community. I’m delighted the hardwork of the staff and the achievements of the children have been recognised.”

School governor Nic Davey added: “People often think of the estate as a problem area, but this proves all children can flourish and achieve in the right school environment and with the right support.”
