SEVENTEEN delegates from the Chinese city of Yangzhou visited Colchester.

The aim of the visit was to increase trade, education and cultural links between their region and the east of England.

Delegates included Mr Ding Chun, vice mayor of Yangzhou.

They began the day by visiting Colchester Castle with Colchester mayor John Elliott to experience the cultural and tourism opportunities in the area.

The group moved on to Colchester Council’s Rowan House offices for a presentation about the town, aimed at helping the visitors understand the economic values of the borough.

The Principal of Yangzhou Polytechnic College also attended and signed a memorandum of understanding with Colchester Institute.

The partnership could see student exchanges and teaching collaborations, and they may run a joint course on electronic engineering to enable students to spend a year in each college.

Paul Smith, councillor responsible for business, said: “It is important for both parties to increase relationships across trade, tourism and education.”
