FORMER students and staff returned home to their academic home to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the University of Essex.

More than 4Gazette: ,000 people attended the Homecoming weekend at the Colchester campus to take a trip down memory lane and enjoy what the university has to offer.

 

 

The three days of celebrations to mark the beginning of the anniversary year included a nostalgia music night in the Sub Zero nightclub and a Blues Brothers tribute night at Wivenhoe House.

An exhibition entitled Something Fierce, Essex Essex: Vision and Reality explored the controversial Sixties, architecture on the Colchester campus and the academic vision of founding vice- chancellor Sir Albert Sloman.

There was also music, magic, zorb football, zumba, a climbing wall, interactive campus trails and tug of wars.

Campus tours gave graduates a chance to revisit their old haunts and there was a chance catch up with long lost friends at department reunions.

NEWSQUEST has produced a special 68-page publication to mark the university’s 50th anniversary.

The magazine features about 100 photographs, including rare archive images.

There are also interviews with the first student, the current vice- chancellor Anthony Forster and other key figures in the university’s success.
