So today has been a long day and I'd say the most mentally challenging so far.

Not because our route was particularly tough, it was more due to our super early start after catching the overnight ferry and the 70 odd miles which lay ahead of us.

Our wake up call on board the ship was perhaps one of the most annoying I've ever encountered: 'Don't worry, be happy' ringing out of a tannoy system at full blast at 6.30am is not, as the kids say, "the one".

It only felt like I'd been asleep for a couple of hours, but once again we were up for an early breakfast and disembarked the ship by 8am local time.

Gazette:

After two days of glorious sunshine in the UK it was a shock to feel the drop in temperature in Holland.

It was a crisp and chilly morning with many of us setting off with an extra layer or two on.

I had to switch my shorts to three-quarter length bottoms at lunchtime to keep my legs warm, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing as it covered up my dodgy cyclist tan lines!

Gazette:

Despite the cold it was a very flat and picturesque ride through the Dutch countryside.

The way they build their houses is so different to the UK, they are beautiful to look at and almost like something you'd see in Noddy's Toy Town!

We all kept remarking on how incredible they were and especially those which looked out over the river.

The main observation of our time here so far is just how well cyclists are looked after.

Everywhere you go there are cycle paths, which don't just stop and start after a few metres.

Drivers have to give way to those on two wheels and they are just so much more patient with cyclists. There is a respect for cycling which you just don't get in the UK, but I guess it's a cultural thing.

Gazette:

However I think we could definitely learn some lessons from the Dutch - everywhere we looked there were people of all ages on their bikes, from five-year-olds to 70-year-olds! It was great to see.

On the whole the team are doing well - we all have our own aches and pains but we're over the half way mark now.

Just two days, both of which will be epic 80-mile efforts, stand between us and Hamelin - the time is flying by and soon the adrenalin will carry us along the home straight!
