Planners do U-turn on Prettygate Tesco

First published in News

TESCO’S bid to open a ninth store in Colchester have been put on hold after a planning U-turn.

Colchester Council gave Hills Building Group permission to convert four shops in Cotman Avenue into one unit, paving the way for Tesco Express store.

However, residents and councillors complained they had not been consulted.

The council has now withdrawn planning permission and Hills Building Group will have to resubmit the plans.

Elizabeth Cropton, 66, of Magazine Farm Way, said: “It means residents can get together, start a proper opposition and get the support we need.”

Its too late-the damage to the Planning Department and the whole control process has been done.
No one who cares about Colchester wants to destroy the town through destructive development. On the other hand unless there is a degree of constant improvement- the town will die.
There are those who moved to Prettygate years ago-many to council houses who should be grateful for a lifestyle that their grandchildren can only dream of.
However planning controls are there for a reason and if the Councillors and Council Officers are negligent then the P45s are always there.

Let's just rejoice that common sense appears to have prevailed. And let's hope there will not be some compensation claim from Hills or Tesco for withdrawal of the planning permission granted last week.

I hope the head of planning services takes a careful look at this matter. He/she appears to have missed it the first time around.

Now let's just think this through. On the one hand we, for the most part are angry that Cbc elected and salaried officers messed up big time. And there are a significant number of Colchesterians who demanded empty desks over this - quite right too. But read on..... today's move us clever - the dip sticks in charge are trying to hood wink us into thinking all is well at CBC, and that by this statement we will back off - I for one will not. Challenge the audit!

Good news to hear that common sense prevails for now but be warned if you oppose this development, this matter is far from over as its only put on hold and they will come again.
