TESCO’S bid to open a ninth store in Colchester have been put on hold after a planning U-turn.

Colchester Council gave Hills Building Group permission to convert four shops in Cotman Avenue into one unit, paving the way for Tesco Express store.

However, residents and councillors complained they had not been consulted.

The council has now withdrawn planning permission and Hills Building Group will have to resubmit the plans.

Elizabeth Cropton, 66, of Magazine Farm Way, said: “It means residents can get together, start a proper opposition and get the support we need.”
