Residents are kicking up a stink over a lingering smell in the air now a food waste factory has been built in Halstead.
Construction has been completed at the anaerobic digestion plant off Colchester Road and it is now being tested and brought up to speed before the first electricity generation from food waste is expected at the end of the month.
The facility, based to the north of the Bluebridge Industrial Estate, is expected to produce two megawatts of electricity - enough to power more than 4,000 homes - from approximately 45,000 tonnes of food waste per year that could otherwise end up in landfill.
But those living nearby have said that an unpleasant smell has already been wafting over houses, believed to come from the factory.
