TRIBUTES have been paid to distinguished academic David Lockwood who has died. He was 85.
Prof Lockwood was an Emeritus Professor at the Univeristy of Essex and a major influence in Sociology for which he was made a CBE.
He published a number of highly respected works on social cohesion, social class and social stratification.
Prof Lockwood was described as an untiring supporter of the work of the university's Institute for Social and Economic Research and was instrumental in setting it up.
David Rose, an Emeritus Professor of Sociology at ISER, described Prof Lockwood as "that rare phenomenon – a theorist with a passionate interest in the real world of both today and of the past".
