Police appeal for "pot bellied attacker" after four hurt at Colchester Medieval Festival

Police are appealing for witness after four people were hurt in an attack at the Colchester Medieval Festival.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Four people were assaulted during an event at Colchester, the incident happened at a medieval fayre in Castle Park at about 5.30pm on Saturday.

"Three women and a man from Colchester were assaulted by several different suspects who had been among a group of men."

He confirmed the police were investigating whether a Nazi salute, allegedly held by the attackers, had played a part in the assault.

The man and two of the women were punched in the face, and the third woman was punched in the back of the head and kicked in the leg.

One of the attackers is believed to be in his 50s, is described as having a pot belly and was wearing a flat cap.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt Sue Richardson on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Officers are also asking anyone with videos or pictures of the incident to come forward.

I know a few people who staff these events. I read a conversation between some of those involved. I must stress I wasn’t there and didn’t see it myself and fully expect various regular posters to decry this, but here’s what I read: apparently, the perpetrators were professed EDL supporters who were doing Nazi salutes. When asked to stop by a male member of staff they beat him. When two females intervened they also hit them. Then on their way out they hit a third female member of staff in the back of the head as a casual leaving gesture. The people having this conversation on facebook had no reason to lie or exaggerate, as they were quite simply relaying events to another member of staff who was not there on the day.

Sounds like typical behaviour for EDL supporters. I hope the police are on to this Facebook conversation.
The EDL are reportedly planning to come back to Colchester soon. Time to ban them.

This could be an isolated incident, or part of a reconnaissance attempt to ready themselves for the large protest yet to come.
Some of the BNP and The EDL are being funded by closet members, who are working for the civil service in the public sector. There is also links with minor support from rogue elements of Masonic orders.
Essex Police local intelligence will obviously be doing their work, but under the current circumstances with other cases it will be a strained task. The tac by EDL appears to be random drunken sporadic opportunist attacks, on a intermittent basis, before the big showdown.

Like it or not the EDL (as an organisation) cannot be banned. If they could then a blanket ban would have to apply to many other groups of protesters, where, all to often the minority extremists spoil legitimate gatherings.

So let EDL come back to Colchester and the best thing for everyone is to ignore them. Not likely to happen though because there are enough extremist groups, who object to EDL that will ensure confrontation on the day. Many of these groups hide under a banner of anti fascism but in reality they are also just spoiling for a fight. One thing is certain these gathering get all the wrong publicity.

Agree that as an organisation they can't be banned and whether I like it or not they are free to air their racist bile. I don't consider it to be extreme to counter those views in a peaceful dignified manner which the overwhelming vast majority of people will do if they choose to use our town as a venue for their repugnant rhetoric .
