A far-right group is planning a demonstration against protesters who opposed a wreath-laying ceremony last month.

The English Defence League is publicising a regional demonstration, to be held in Colchester on Saturday, July 12.

The group has accused anti-fascist protesters who attended an EDL wreath-laying ceremony in the town last month of showing a lack of respect.

Whatever the "leadership" of the EDL says, many of the foot-soldiers who actually turn up will be looking for a fight, and there will also be elements within the anti-fascists who want the same.

The heartening fact remains that the EDL will be unable to muster much support. I do wonder why the Gazette is reporting this more than a month in advance. You almost get the feeling that they want it to kick off. No doubt, we will have a few commenters saying it's a free country, the EDL is a peaceful protest movement etc. Well, if you feel that way, I hope you will have the courage of your convictions and will show your face on 12th July.

The EDL will once again try to claim the imagery of D-day, Churchill etc. The BNP and Britain First have been doing this. I have seen the BNP site using the story of the old veteran who went over to Normandy by himself. The veterans would tell them in no uncertain terms that their message of hate is not what their friends died for. Doubtless, they will once again head for the War Memorial, especially if The Castle pub once again encourages them in. I hope both sides will have the due respect for that memorial and what it represents.

As long as they do not break the law they are perfectly entitled to make a peaceful protest. Anyone saying they should be banned are the real fascists.

You checked out the poster, right? They're making a point about a lack of police presence and practically claiming that they're going to fight the anti-facist group - even if they someone managed to make a peaceful protest, which they haven't anywhere yet, surely the fact that their entire premise is xenophobic they'd be in breach of hate laws anyway.

Best thing for any normal person who actually cares about this country is to be as far away as possible from both sides of these scum bag groups and carry on as norm I hope (like the gazette) that it does "kick off" and both of these group knock some sense into one another, however as normal with pack mentality they will just stay in large groups and call each other names, how mature! I'm sure the d day veterans 70 years on so happy to see what we do with our freedom!

So the wreath laying for Bandsman Rigby British Army +R.I.P+ was a tester a one foot dip in the water.
I saw them walking away from the ceremony some of them down st peters street and they were not looking friendly or sociable.
I have 11 year old nephews who walk in the vicinity of the dutch quarter and this is somewhat unnerving for me.
Basically you know that 3rd time around in two years, there is going to be something going down.
Freedom of speech and freedom to protest on all sides, we will have to wait and see.

The "pot bellied attacker" and his friends have just shown Essex Police what the EDL come to Colchester for. See the comment on the story about the mediaeval fair in Castle Park this last weekend.
Since they are unable to behave peaceably, it is time to ban this vile rabble from Colchester.

Will the EDL also lay a wreathe to commemorate the over 100,000 innocent Iraqis killed (and I'm not talking insurgents - I am talking innocent people)?

I guess not. Says it all really.
