A CAMPAIGN to save a Grade II listed church from demolition has become the latest recipient of an anonymous letter full of cash.

This week the Gazette has run a series of stories about people who have been posting envelopes full of £20 notes.

They have all been fully addressed and included a piece of lined paper with no note.

Tim Young, a Colchester councillor who has been campaigning to save St Peter’s Church in Birch, also received one of the letters, but his had a big difference – a note.

It read: “Keep up the campaign Tim. This is for the save Birch church campaign.”

Mr Young said: “I think it’s wonderful.”

He gave the donation to North East Essex Building Preservation Trust, which is heading up the campaign.

Church commissions and the Chelmsford Diocese have said the church, which was declared redundant in 1990, will be demolished.

Campaigners hope communities secretary Eric Pickles decides to call in the decision, and it will be looked at again.
