Legal ruling means work can begin on new Premier Inn

First published in News

A HOTEL can finally be built yards from Colchester’s Castle Park after a councillor’s attempt to secure a judicial review failed for the fifth time.

Whitbread won planning permission in September 2012 from Colchester Council to build an 85-room Premier Inn in St Peter’s Street.

But work to demolish a former Royal Mail depot and build a three-and-a-half-storey hotel in its place has not been able to begin following legal challenges by ward councillor Jo Hayes.

Mrs Hayes, a barrister, said planners had not been told Whitbread had been offered an alternative hotel location in Queen Street, which was higher up a list of the council’s preferred sites.

But now, after a fifth attempt to get permission from first the Administrative Court of London and then the Court of Appeal for a full judicial hearing was rejected, she has exhausted all legal avenues to stop the development beginning.

Work will start this summer, creating 30 jobs.

Would someone please disband CBC and start all over again with fresh views and realistic 21st century ideas and plans. A great town slowly dragged through the mire by petty little persons with no vision and high arrogance and personal agendas

Perhaps an upstanding person like you should stand for election. All the people you so freely attack as 'petty little persons with no vision and high arrogance and personal agendas' have been elected by townsfolk in their areas who presumably don't share your view. It's true more people don't vote at all than do, but if you don't vote you can't complain about these petty little people being elected by those who do. Bu tyour chance is coming. In 2016 the entire council stands down and will come up for re-election. If you don't like them get rid of them.

you cannot is the simple answer.
also a number of posts you have placed on this site have been in support of Ali Ba Ba and the The Teflons so where your erratic thought processes come from one beggars belief.
i am going to have to google what the word mirokou means because it is as confusing as your posts.
please tell us in infinite detail who those petty little people are? with no minds and small vision be frank rather talking in rhetoric.
i have been a huge critic of the non sticks and yet every time i have said something you have come on and berated my posts.
colchester council must think there is something wrong with the planning suggestion, otherwise why would they be spending thousands on legal fees entering into such litigation?
and by the way great town is it?
tell that to james attfields family god bless them+

Colchester has got enough hotels, it doesn't need any more. Jo Hayes's challenge was perfectly valid. The matter should now be laid to rest. It is utterly pointless for CBC to waste money taking legal action against one of its own councillors for doing what she believed was right.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that in the printed Gazette it says CBC is taking legal action against councillor Hayes. This is omitted from the story as seen here.

Can you expand on this Boris? Regardless on the merits or not of Jo's approach that sounds ridiculous.

Fors :- hotels ,town centre expansion via development of shop etc , bus park ,link roads , improved transport links, any town centre facelift, reduction in late licences , (give the town centre back to everyone)

Against:- First site, Jumbo being blocked for development , failure to upkeep the cleanliness of our town, failure to ensure business landlords maintain upkeep on their premises.

Colchester is a classic barometer town but its needs direction and strong lead, positive decisions taken for whats good for the town and towns people.. not the individual. I fail to see how my previous posts confuse you as they have always be of the same subject matter. Lets not get personal with each other , this is a site for people to allow to express their opinion . PS I am unable to run for Council office. As for berating you i think you have me confused with someone else.
