Anger at bar’s plans to open until 3.30am

A NEW late-night bar in Colchester will add to the town centre’s problems, according to preservation campaigners.

Colchester Civic Society says Hudson bar, in Head Street, will add to disturbances in the early hours of the morning.

The bar’s application to open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights until 3.30am will be decided by Colchester Council on Monday, April 14.

I doubt if they will get 3.30 am. They have put in a deliberately late time so that they can then be seen to be open to negotiate. Most likely they will get 2.00. I just wish my little local pub was able to get the same leeway, but they have to jump through hoops to get anything from the council - even though it's the town centre swilling holes which have the trouble. On the other hand, I guess having these places there keeps the idiots out of my little local.

I wish they'd hurry up with the building. Work appears to have stopped.

I think that's the best way to look at it, plus your local will probably still be there when the numb nuts have gone to the wall! If the police can't stop someone being attacked in the town centre at midnight what chance have you got of finding one in the town at 3-00am? Have we not got enough of these drinking dens already?

Can't see myself ever planning on going there, but as an alternative spin, the majority of the end of night bars/clubs at the minute are on Queens Street/St Botolphs Street, an area that can't handle the number of people leaving at 3:30am - would having somewhere open as late on Head Street not lead to smaller numbers of wasted people congregating in the same place at the same time?

This building was previously a late night licensed premises. They should be able to demonstrate with evidence that problems in the town or neighboring area have got better since its closure or that the amount of noise pollution has decreased.

It's owned by the same people who own several other bars/clubs in the town:

I'm not sure why there would be 'anger' at their proposed opening times, it's only 30 minutes later than other places in the town. It might even help distribute the punters more evenly and release them on to the streets at staggered (quite literally) times, rather than everybody being chucked out at once.

Is it really that big of a deal?

Yep, spot on - more delicious halal meat shops to spend your hard earned pennies in that you may have left over from the bookies, pound shops and charity shops that infest the town centre.
