Increasing demand on food banks

Gazette: Increasing demand on food banks Increasing demand on food banks

COLCHESTER Food Bank will hand struggling families as much food over the next ten months as it has donated since its formation five years ago.

This month the charity, set up in 2009, handed out its 50th tonne of non-perishable food and vital supplies to a family or resident referred to them by one of 100 organisations.

The Rev Andrew Fordyce, chairman of the food bank’s trustees, said a rise in demand partly linked to recent welfare reforms meant he expected to have donated 50 more tonnes by the close of 2014.

Of course there's an increase in demand when you're giving out free food. Gives them more money for vodka/fags/gambling.

Don't be so asinine, do you really think that anyone can just stroll in and wander the aisles like they do in a supermarket? They have to be in desperate need of help and get a referral from a professional person IE a doctor, health visitor or social worker. They are given an emergency food parcel. There is an increase in demand due to vulnerable people losing benefits they need. Not ALL claimants are scroungers who drink and smoke, despite what the Daily Mail say.

That's starvation and poverty.

Not, don't have any food for a day or two until my benefits come in.

have you visited the food bank? do you know how it works ? do you ever donate to the food bank- not necessary food, but time, effort or support.?
If your benefits are ever stopped for any reason , you may need the services of the food bank, better to give out the odd carrier bag of food to some one who may be scamming the system, than not have this valuable service .
ps - this may really upset you but colchester has a soup kitchen !! fancy having free food for the hungry needy & homeless !!

Just because it's worse elsewhere doesn't mean it's not a major issue here. We're a wealthy country, with large amounts of food. People shouldn't have to go hungry.
