Work can now start on Colchester's community stadium, after councillors waived planning restrictions to give it the go-ahead.

It means Colchester United is all set to get its £14 million home at Cuckoo Farm much sooner than anticipated.

The stadium can now be built before an access route from the A12 is put in - something which is at least six years away.

Councillors last night voted unanimously in favour of the 10,000 all-seater stadium.

Chief executive Marie Partner told the Evening Gazette: "That was the last and final hurdle for us.

"We're absolutely delighted. We can now actually get on with the building of this stadium and deliver a prestigious community facility for the people of Colchester, and of course a new home for the dedicated fans of Colchester United."
