MP's appeal in "save our town centre" battle

Gazette: MP's appeal in "save our town centre" battle MP's appeal in "save our town centre" battle

A REPORT in the Gazette has been sent to Communities Secretary Eric Pickles amid fears Colchester town centre could lose its identity.

The Gazette revealed efforts by Colchester Council to block out-of-town developments if they could harm the town centre were believed to be against new Government guidelines.

The council ranks the town centre as more important than other shopping centres, such as Tollgate or Tiptree village centre.

However, a consultation has been launched after a Government inspector said this appeared to be at odds with the Government’s national planning policy framework.

Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell has sent a copy of the article to Mr Pickles with a letter explaining his fears. The Lib Dem pointed out major investment was planned in Colchester town centre.

Don't think the town centre needs saving, after all it has been awarded a much coveted purple flag or should that be a puke covered flag.

Unfortunately whilst CBC continue with a policy that prevents major stores coming to the town, eg; John Lewis, and until they understand that out of town centres, with free parking, is what most want Colchester town centre continue to die. Link all this to internet shopping competition then the spiral will continue downwards.

Wake up! We have expensive car parks, a very poor road infrastructure, very expensive public transport, without a proper central transport hub, and with the oldest buses polluting our streets who wants to visit anyway! So if that's what identity is all about then just continue to bury you head!

What disingenuous nonsense from Bob Russell and the Council.

If the council truly valued the town centre it would have retained it's rich heritage. If it really felt the town centre was of major importance it wouldn't have messed up so royally on planning.

Most importantly, if the council really wanted to attract more people to shop in Colchester (surely the true sign of a successful shopping centre) it wouldn't have made it so difficult to get there, and expensive to park there.

With the town centre becoming more food and drink angled, even as a Colchestrian, I'd actually prefer to go somewhere like Tollgate to shop. Free parking, easy access, What's not to like? If only there was an alternative to a supermarket and more small shops there to choose from...

Two quotes above from the usual gang singing a sour tune now?
You lot only have yourselves to blame.
You have an MP Thats a cross between Dr Who and Someone From "Open ALL Hours" backing the council up WHY?I can think of a number of reasons and one good nepotistic one!
To my mind when Lizzie was dishing out the gong, the sword should have gone horizontal.
The town now has a poisonous cocktail of old boy locals mixed with the unwanted s from other parts of the country.
Colchester is fast becoming a S**T***E
The reason why Billy Frame and I do like the bloke have known him for donkeys years, wants trade to stay in the centre is because of the fact he lives in St Albans Road..
Im born and bred here and the older i get the worse the place looks.
The people here are the P**S
You go to any national food chain place outside the town like Toby, Pizza land, Harvester the food and the service is Millions times better than what you get in Colchester.
People in TOLLGATE are not bothered wether you lot in Colchester come to shop over here with us, because we get TOWIE people here from all over the county.

When the government put us in with Braintree & Witham we got an MP and a party that cares about us.
Not one that spouts up as and when they feel like it. The last thing you need is an ex journalist MP with a REP for being a turn coat!
I will admit Ms Patel has had a rough start but her round is 150 miles square.

Colchester people are a nasty bunch and their reputation and attitude is becoming more prolific.

We in Stanway & Tollgate do not want to be associated or governed by the likes of you lot any-more?
I pray the day that our local levies change too and we pay to a different town hall than Rowan House and The Teflon's.

It should be up to our Parish Council who does what and states what not, Row---An House and the SHEEP--ens.

Sorry Sir Robert

But the town centre is dead and blame it on your mates in street services

I watched PMQ's this week. Bob Russell mentioned nothing about this - he did, however, suggest that the military should not be cut as it is being.

David Cameron pretty much ignored him.
