A MAIN road was closed for more than six hours after a police car smashed into two telegraph poles.

The patrol car also damaged a garden wall during the incident between Colchester and Coggeshall, near to Marks Tey shortly before 8pm on Friday. Power lines were brought down as well.

The car was on its way to an incident on the A12 at Rivenhall.

An Essex Police spokesman said: “Officers lost control of a marked BMW 530 while travelling along the eastbound carriageway of the A120, near to Little Tey.

“The car struck a garden wall and two telegraph poles.”

Both occupants, male officers, were taken to Colchester General Hosptial by paramedics having sustained minor injuries.

They were later discharged and are recovering at home.

The road was closed until after 2am on Saturday while UK Power Networks engineers repaired fallen power lines.
